Community Outreach
Community Outreach
We are proud to work alongside our local schools and other community organizations in a unified effort to provide quality sailing and marine science education for local kids, families, and non-profit groups. We’re excited to announce that through the experiences detailed below, we offered a total of over 500 sailing experiences across the 2025 season!
Celebrate our Waters
We are excited to once again offer free community sailing through the Celebrate our Waters event, hosted by the Orleans Pond Coalition. Click here for more event information! And click the button below to register for sailing at PBCB:
An Exciting New Collaboration
In 2025, PBCB had the amazing opportunity to collaborate with the Center for Coastal Studies, the Cape Cod National Seashore, and the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe to host several youth groups from the Tribe at PBCB. Kids ages 6-18 from the Neekun Camp and Preserving our Homelands participated in our First Sail program as well as scientific exploration aboard the Floating Classroom. Scientists from CCS and the Seashore led groups in activities on various topics including eelgrass, seals, middens, and bay history, exploring the intersection of western science and traditional ecological knowledge while visiting Sipson Island and other parts of the bay. We are thrilled by this new partnership and hope to continue it for many years to come! Many thanks to the Friends of Pleasant Bay for providing the funding for this collaboration. Stay tuned for more on the second part of this project–reviving our shellfish upweller and working with Tribal members and scientists to explore aquaculture opportunities right here at PBCB.
First Sail
We’re excited to invite 3rd graders from our local schools to participate in First Sail each spring. First Sail was created by our co-founders as a means of introducing local kids to sailing and ensuring they each had access to at least one experience on the water. Many local children have either never been on a boat or have never been sailing. PBCB is committed to changing this and ensure local kids have an opportunity to enjoy Pleasant Bay. Absolutely nothing beats the energy of a group of first-time sailors enjoying a break from their classrooms. Many teachers remarked that the experience brought out confidence and camaraderie amongst their students.
PBCB is grateful for First Sail grant support from The Friends of Pleasant Bay, a local non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing access to Pleasant Bay.
Welcome Weetumuw School, Harwich, Eastham, Orleans, Chatham, and Brewster students!
Council on Aging Trips
In 2025, we partnered with the local COAs again to offer two low-cost experiences for seniors: sailing and trips on our floating classroom.
Come for a spin around Pleasant Bay in a Flying Scot or catboat! You’ll learn the sailing basics with one of PBCB’s wonderful instructors and a handful of other COA members. This is a slightly more adventurous experience than the floating classroom…you may be splashed and you will feel the waves under the boat. First time sailors welcome!
Please contact your COA for more information.
This program is funded in part by the James Holland Davis Fund of the Cape Cod Foundation.
Annual PBCB Open House
For community members both new and familiar to PBCB, we host an open house each July. The event is totally free and includes snacks and drinks, kids’ crafts and activities, and sailing experiences for all ages. This is a great opportunity to see our campus, meet our staff, and try out sailing in a Flying Scot or catboat with one of our instructors!
Group Experiences
In addition to the programs above, we’re proud to have offered other small group sailing experiences, in conjunction with the following groups:
- Special Abilities Fitness
- Barnstable High Special Ed
- Chelsea Recreation
- Eastham 4th Grade
- Big Brothers Big Sisters
