On July 19th, the Floating Classroom Research Vessel finally arrived on Cape Cod! The Friends of Pleasant Bay is busy outfitting the boat for use and the marina has now has installed engines, hydraulic steering, the solar panels, the lab table, and is waiting final fittings and testing. It will have to undergo a float test and stress test over the next 10 days. Once it passes, the vessel will receive its final Coast Guard certificate and be ready for shakedown trips. We can’t wait to start offering science and research opportunities!

Whales are some of the most majestic animals of the oceans, but many are facing extinction and are struggling to survive. What is being done globally, nationally, and locally to help slow the loss of whales? IFAW’s Whale Program Director Patrick Ramage leads efforts to protect our planet’s great whales from commercial whaling and the many other threats they face worldwide. He will be talking about his successes and many challenges.
Patrick’s whale program team supports IFAW projects as diverse as Humpback Whale research in Zanzibar, a “Floating Classroom” educational project in Dominica, West Indies, and world-class whale research conducted by IFAW’s state-of-the-art sailing vessel Song of the Whale. His whale team is also working to improve understanding and protection of whales locally within the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary off Cape Cod, an important feeding ground for many marine mammals including the critically endangered Right Whale.
Join us for an evening of summer fun to support PBCB’s sailing,
marine education and environmental stewardship programs.
